According to the latest data released by the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NJUPT) ranked 97th in the May 2018 ESI data Chinese Mainland University TOP 100, making it into the top 100 for the first time. Also, the discipline of Materials Science has ranked among the top 5‰of ESI global discipline, which marked a new step in ESI discipline construction, laying a solid foundation for the construction of world-class disciplines and high-level universities in Jiangsu.

At present, ESI has become the world wide for one of the important evaluation index tools for universities, academic institutions, national / international academic level and influence, the database to be arranged subject (a total of 22 subjects), collection of surface coverage of the global tens of thousands or even more than 10000 units of different research disciplines. The ESI database is updated every two months. This data was updated on May 11, 2018 Beijing time, covering the period from January 1, 2008 to February 28, 2018. In the latest period of ESI data statistics, 4 disciplines of NJUPT ranking the ESI global top 1% advanced side by side with significantly improved rankings compared with the previous period (March 2018.) Among them, the Materials Science entered the global top 5‰for the first time, increased by 38 compared with March 2018. The Chemistry rose by 58, close to the top 5‰in the world. The Engineering rose by 62 and the Computer Science 45. With a significant increase by 125, NJUPT is one of the Chinese universities which have made the greatest progress in the ESI global ranking, second only to North China Electric Power University.
